THE COMMUNEEAST MELBOURNE, VICTORIAThe Commune is a café bar located in the basement of Tasma Terrace, one of Melbourne’s most well known Victorian residential buildings. Tasma Terrace is heritage listed and houses the head office of the National Trust in Victoria. Due to the heritage importance of the building we decided to reveal as much of the original internal fabric as we could and carefully introduce new elements into the space resulting in a successful juxtaposition of old and new. New building works included the removal of walls to reveal original arches and a staircase, sandblasting of paint to reveal exposed brickwork, and the removal of infill façade cladding to create a visual and physical connection between the internal basement space and the adjacent external public garden.
